What do you think of when you imagine the 1920’s?
Elegance. Extravagance. Refinement.
These are also the words we would use to describe the newly refurbished Hotel Grand Windsor in the heart of Auckland city.
This architectural landmark may be old, but The Grand Windsor’s multi-million dollar restoration has named it winner of The World’s Best New Hotel, and it is now one of the top 5-star hotels in the country.
This boutique city getaway instantly transports you to a more glamorous time, and is right on the doorstep of Auckland’s finest culture and dining experiences.
The Story of An Architectural Icon
The Hotel Grand Windsor has been an iconic part of the central Auckland story for nearly a century. It has been home to many different businesses over the years, but it was originally a restaurant.
When it was purchased by the Cooke family in 1928, 10 storeys was the maximum height for buildings in the city. Although Auckland’s modern skyscrapers now tower above it on Queen Street, it still holds an air of old-time magnificence.
Originally a popular tea house frequented by socialites, locals and visitors used to come to Cooke’s Restaurant for its famed soda fountain which was said to have healing properties. The upper floors housed Auckland’s finest bakers, confectioners and ice cream makers! It has now been restored to its former Art Deco design as a hotel, and provides unprecedented luxury for its guests.
The Windsor Building is a heritage-listed masterpiece, and a crown jewel in Auckland’s architectural history. With the dedication of CPG Hotels and the MGallery by Sofitel brand, guests can now experience the refinement of the 1920’s but with all the personalized service of a modern 5-star boutique hotel.
Authentic Historical Dining Experiences
The hotel is also home to Cooke’s Restaurant and Bar. This is an ode to the original owners and original use of the building.
As a guest you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner, all with a strong focus on wholefoods and sustainably sourced ingredients. Like the suites, the restaurant has been decorated with class Art Deco furnishings to create an ultra luxurious feel.
This dining experience is a curious mix of modern and traditional. Group Executive Chef Jinu Abraham has taken dishes from the original restaurant, and turned them into signature dishes with a modern twist!
If you are looking for a unique cocktail, you can’t miss their signature drink, The Luscious Dainty. In the 1930’s, the Windsor Building held the famous soda bar. This drink is a piece of history in a glass.
Cooke’s Restaurant and Bar also offers an authentic afternoon high tea. As well as sipping on a variety of teas and wine, you get to experience 1920’s favourites. Indulge in buttermilk scones, elderflower profiterole and strawberry and rose preserve. Designed to refine your palate, this is one of the most historically accurate high tea experiences in Auckland.
